Human resources and artificial intelligence: the AIring project

By automating tasks and procedures, AIring aims to transform processes and efficiency in the HR sector

5 million downloads in September alone, generating $4.6 million in revenue through the App Store and Play Store and marking a peak compared with previous months: $2.1 million in June, $2.74 million in July and a significant increase to $3.81 million in August. These figures come from the paid monthly subscription, priced at $19.99 per month, which provides access to the full potential of ChatGPT.

The past year was the year of OpenAI, which soon became a hot topic of conversation and a source of memes to rival Leonardo Di Caprio.

Its ease of use has contributed to its popularity even among less technical users, given the interface's similarity to automated support systems. Even a child could get an answer from ChatGPT, but what kind of answer?

Used primarily for text generation – with some notable examples, including a script for South Park’s Deep Learning episode – OpenAI’s AI reveals its true potential to a select few. The recent AIring project uses one of these capabilities to radically transform the management of applications and CV analysis, redefining recruitment processes.

AIring: the project in brief

AIring simplifies three of the main tasks carried out by HR staff: the assessment of external resources, CV analysis and the updating of internal CVs through an AI-powered system. The reason for choosing OpenAI's artificial intelligence is clear: no other solution currently compares.

By providing ChatGPT with the right inputs—in our case, CVs—the system can interpret the data and generate information that is easier to read and use (CV summaries, JSON files, scores, etc.).

The process does not take place through the traditional chat interface; OpenAI provides the option of using an API (Application Programming Interface). Using an authentication token generated when subscribing, we can make “HTTP calls” from development environments outside the chat.

In simple terms, we only need to send a request to the OpenAI API with the authentication token to receive a response, which in our case includes text generated by ChatGPT.

Application and hiring stage

The initial stage, which covers the application and hiring process, begins with the uploading of CVs in PDF format. They are then converted into database elements through extraction using Apache PDF in the Java back end and stored temporarily in a MongoDB repository.

The extracted text, which includes categorised information on career history, education and skills, is then processed into a JSON object and finally catalogued in another repository, together with the personal data previously excluded.

Improving internal CVs

The second phase of the project involves optimising internal CVs through the ChatGPT interface. In this case, the employee uploads their CV, which is then extracted from the front end. A subsequent conversation with ChatGPT, which at this stage has access to the relevant career information, provides suggestions for improving the text via the ChatGPT API.

AI is not infallible

While ChatGPT's limited creativity has been criticised by creative professionals, for the AIring project it is a significant advantage: we need data, not fine words.

However, while the project was still in progress, some of the limitations of OpenAI’s AI became apparent, particularly the data processing time. The platform takes around four minutes for each CV, making it impractical to handle large volumes of work.

Furthermore, if ‘the ability to work in a team’, ‘excellent leadership skills’ and proficiency in three languages at C2 level were qualities shared by everyone, AIring would work without issue. However, experience shows that people lie, especially when writing their CVs: it remains the responsibility of HR to understand fully who they are dealing with during the interview.

The data speaks for itself

To remain competitive, we can no longer overlook the potential offered by AI, beginning with accessibility and cost optimisation.

Processing data with AI provides greater precision, fewer human errors and greater accuracy in data processing. Thanks to its capacity to store large volumes of data, AI can also identify patterns and hidden trends, providing valuable insights for more informed decision-making.

In summary, the use of artificial intelligence for data processing results in improved business performance and the ability to adapt quickly to market challenges, with significantly lower operating costs.
